The Master of Science in Economics serves the dual purpose of preparing students for doctoral study and for employment in business and government. Graduates from the program have had success in finding positions with public utilities, state and federal government agencies, private industry and financial institutions. Graduates have also gone on to obtain doctorates at Oklahoma State University and other major universities throughout the United States.
The degree offers a well-rounded graduate program designed to meet the needs of the vast majority of students. Course work and examinations are offered in select areas and fields of economics. The program also has sufficient flexibility for students to take course work in other disciplines if so desired. Students also have the opportunity to observe and participate in current research through the department’s ongoing series of workshops in which the faculty from OSU and other universities collaborate.
Academic Program
All graduates of recognized undergraduate programs are eligible to apply. An undergraduate major in economics is desirable, but not essential. Students without an undergraduate degree in economics may be required to take some undergraduate economics courses as prerequisites for which no graduate credit may be earned. The Graduate Studies Committee evaluates all applications for admission. Admission decisions are based on an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or better, GRE scores, and recent letters of reference.
General Requirements
The Masters program provides students with a solid background in economic theory and broadens their acquaintance with special subject areas within the discipline. A total of 30 graduate credit hours are required to complete the program with a Thesis. A total of 33 graduate credit hours are required to complete the program with a Research Report/Creative Component. A minimum of 21 total hours must be at the 5000 level.
Admission

The following steps are required in order to apply for admission to the Master of Science in Economics:
Submit the following to the Graduate College:
- Application form – all students must apply to the OSU Graduate College,http://grad.okstate.edu
- Official transcript from each institution attended, including Oklahoma State University
Submit the following directly to the Department of Economics:
- General Record Examination (GRE) official score
- Three letters of recommendation
