This postgraduate diploma course is part of our development management programme. Managing development gets ever more complex, as more agencies become involved, new goals emerge, complementing and confronting existing goals, and the right of ‘beneficiaries’ to participate in their own development is increasingly asserted.
This diploma addresses the challenge of this complexity. The core modules give practitioners the opportunity to strengthen their policy development and project management skills. The diploma thus equips practitioners to negotiate good change more effectively.
The postgraduate diploma is most suitable for:
- project management professionals have responsibility for development initiatives in government, non-governmental organisations, international and inter-governmental agencies and public and private enterprises
- people who want to work in these areas, or who are interested in public action for development
- people who want to study development and management
- people who want to study an international perspective on management.

Time required and cost
To achieve the Postgraduate Diploma in Development Management you must successfully gain 120 credits. We recommend that you take no more than 30 credits in your first year. The course typically takes a minimum of three years to complete. There is no time limit for completing the courses in the development management programme, though we cannot guarantee that the same selection of modules will continue to be available.
For details on module cost please see the table at the bottom of this page. The total cost of the course depends on the modules studied. As a guide the total fee for 2012/13 academic year was from £6855 to £8335.

Career impact
This diploma will equip development practitioners to negotiate good change more effectively. The core modules give practitioners the opportunity to strengthen their policy development and project management skills. They put inter-organisational relationships at the heart of development management, offering a framework for analysing existing relationships and for making strategic decisions about relationships that are required, and covering skills – mapping and modelling, negotiating and brokering – that contribute to the building of relationships.

Entry requirements
To study for this postgraduate diploma you must hold a bachelors degree from a UK university or other recognised degree-awarding body, or a course at equivalent level.

You will also need to be proficient in English, to an IELTS standard of 6.0. If you are unsure you will be able to take a free English test as part of the registration process.
Classification of course
On successful completion of the required modules you can be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Development Management entitling you to use the letters PG Dip Dev Mgmt (Open) after your name.
Once you have completed the postgraduate diploma, you can gain the MSc in Development Management by completing a further 30 credits of study from the postgraduate diploma modules and a 30-credit development management project.
