The College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno has a long and storied history as a builder of business experts. Founded in 1956, the College was led in its earliest days by founding dean Robert Weems. The College enjoyed the fast-track to success: within 16 months of opening its doors, the College's Bureau of Business and Economic Research gained full membership in the national organization, the Associated University Bureaus of Business and Economic Research. The swiftness of the accomplishment set a new record.
According to a history of the University written by Nevada historian James Hulse, within two years of its founding "the college had eleven faculty members and in five years it counted twenty-one full-time professionals. It received accreditation from the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business in 1961, its fifth year."
The College of Business expanded the breadth and quality of its programs in short order. In 1965, the College conducted the first Intercollegiate Simulated Business Games and in 1974, sponsored the first annual Symposium on Gambling. The study of the gaming industry remains a major focus of the College, demonstrated by its Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming, founded in 1989, and a minor in Gaming Management. The College's relationships with major Reno- and Las Vegas-based gaming companies have allowed students to engage closely with those businesses through internship and research opportunities.
The spectrum of courses offered through the College include Accounting, Information Systems, and the acclaimed part-time MBA program, which was recently ranked fourth in the country by BusinessWeek magazine. Degree program expansion continues with a planned Master's in Tax Accountancy scheduled to begin in fall 2013.
