Paul Tarr, Ph.D., is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the California Institute of Technology, where he studies the metabolism and genetics of hormonal regulation of stem cell function. He has a strong interest in synthetic biology and fermentation reactions, and looks forward to sharing his 15 years of biochemistry and genetics research experience in academia to bring a current real-world perspective of the field. He obtained his bachelor's degree in biochemistry and doctorate in biological chemistry from UCLA.

An elective in the Certificate Program in the Essentials of Green Chemistry, in the Post-Baccalaureate Health Professions Program, and in the Professional Biomedical Sciences Program

Learn to integrate the most important concepts in classical and molecular genetics into an overall picture of what a gene is, how it functions, how it may be altered and how it is inherited. Study the molecular basis of gene function and mutation, Mendelian genetics, transmission systems, regulation of cellular processes, developmental genetics, cytoplasmic inheritance, population genetics and multifactoral inheritance. Learn about recent advances in biotechnology that have genetic implications, including the Human Genome Project and advances in genetic engineering technology.

Prerequisite: One year of college-level general biology for majors

Steven Kelley, Ph.D., is an instructor at California State University, East Bay, and at Holy Names University. He has taught biostatistics, evolution, genetics, virology, oceanography and field ecology classes around the Bay Area and in Hawaii. Kelley has researched the evolution of sex using plants, the evolution of virulence in wild viruses and the causes of the pelagic fish decline in the San Francisco Bay.
