Understanding Explain Plans & Index Utilization Online with Dan Hotka

(Total: seven and half hours) Join us for this novel and original Expert Seminars virtual series right from your desktop. Each training session gives you the opportunity to gain deep insight into Database.

These highly advanced sessions will cover the following:

Day 1: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM CET: Understanding Explain Plans

This session starts out with a complete overview of the Oracle architecture so students can get an understanding how their SQL and applications can take advantage of the computing environment. It goes into detail on how Oracle arrives at an execution plan, the explain plan. The trainer will illustrate various coding techniques that insure the SQL runs at maximum performance in the current and future Oracle database environments. This knowledge is important to:

• Understand HOW Oracle is going to process your SQL
• Be able to spot good and poor Explain Plans
• Work with various HINTS to influence the Oracle Explain Plan to produce a more performant running SQL
• Be able to code to insure the SQL maximizes performance and takes advantage of the Oracle RDBMS
• Using NEW Explain Plan options

This section also covers Parallel Explain Plans, how to spot SQL problems by reviewing the explain plan.

Day 2: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM CET: Working with Indexes

Indexes can greatly improve performance of SQL, but is this always the case? The answer will surprise you. Also, what is the ramification of too many indexes? Can too much of a good thing not be good? Again, the answer may surprise you. The trainer will illustrate various cost-based statistics that are useful to improve SQL performance and index selection as well. Understanding how Indexes work and when to use the different kinds of indexes is critical to both individual SQL performance and the overall batch cycle performance.

• Understand the various Index Options, both B-Tree and Bitmap Indexes
• Utilize HINTS to improve Index selectivity
• Various CBO Statistic Options
• Monitor Indexes to see if they are even being used
• Understand HOW Indexes work and how to identify a poor-quality index (ie: one that Oracle will never use...)
• Oracle10g Tablespace Performance Issues and Indexes

Both of these sections includes a variety of scripts to aid the developer/user in viewing explain plan options and monitoring indexes.
