Iona College opened its doors in 1940, with nine Christian Brothers and six lay faculty greeting the first class. The Christian Brothers named the College after Iona, an island off the west coast of Scotland, home to the monastery of St. Columba.

Iona College is a diverse community of learners and scholars dedicated to academic excellence in the tradition of the Christian Brothers and American Catholic higher education. The College is dedicated to excellence and in educating lifelong learners who embody the values of justice, peace and service. Iona offers more than 45 program majors and 35 minors; many of the programs have achieved the highest accreditations from national accrediting organizations. Graduate degrees in more than 20 programs are offered at the main campus in New Rochelle and the Rockland Graduate Center in Pearl River, NY. The Hagan School of Business’ MBA program is accredited by AACSB International – the leading accrediting body for business schools. The College also offers several study abroad opportunities in Australia, France, Ireland, Italy, Spain and more, and Iona’s proximity to New York City provides exceptional internship and other learning opportunities.

The College has a vibrant student life program with more than 80 campus organizations and hundreds of volunteer and service opportunities provided by Mission and Ministry. Students can choose to be part of the Student Government Association; debate in the Mock Trial Team; write for The Ionian or shoot video for ICTV; perform with the Iona Players, Iona Singers or Gospel Choir; play in the iconic Pipe Band and much more. Residential Life consists of five residence halls and an off-campus housing office with many programs to keep students engaged on campus.

The campus in recent years has undergone a transformation with the addition of a student union, athletics center, and major expansion and technological advancements to the main library. A trading floor in the AACSB-accredited Hagan School of Business is scheduled for a fall opening.

Iona's NCAA Division 1 athletics program is comprised of 21 varsity teams and competes in the MAAC conference. The Gaels are known for their achievements in cross country and track and field, basketball, swimming and diving, soccer, rowing, lacrosse and more. The general student population can participate in a robust intramurals program.
