After presenting different sanitation planning frameworks you will learn about the different systems and technologies – the key terminology and concepts and why systems’ thinking is crucial for urban environmental sanitation. The course covers the whole sanitation chain providing detailed information about appropriate sanitation systems (e.g. waterless pit-based, decentralized water-based, black water transport). Eawag-Sandec and EPFL jointly offer this course with sanitation experts from the World Bank and WHO. LANGUAGES We simultaneously offer this course in English and French. The name of the French course is « Planification & Design des Systèmes et Technologies d’Assainissement ». MOOC SERIES “SANITATION, WATER AND SOLID WASTE FOR DEVELOPMENT” This course is one of four in the series “Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development".

Who is this class for: This course is an introduction – the only requirements are an Internet connection and an interest in the topic. A general background in environmental or civil engineering, urban planning or geography would help to fully benefit from this course.

WEEK 1


Introduction to sanitation planning & systems approach



The course will begin with an overview of why sanitation is important for human health and environmental protection, especially in urban areas. This is followed by a presentation of the importance of the Enabling Environment. It will then review existing state-of-the-art environmental sanitation planning approaches (Sanitation 21, CLUES, CLTS) that are currently being used in international development.
