About the Course

This course gives a broad overview of contraceptive methods and explores issues that influence contraceptive choices today. We will discuss the mechanism of action, effectiveness, risk/benefit, side effects and contraindications for each contraceptive method, as well as ask some questions about contraceptive decision making. What are some of the factors that influence contraception use and decision making? Are there specific cultural, ethnic, social and environmental factors? We will also look at the relationship between contraception use and risk of acquiring Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

About the Instructor(s)

Jerusalem Makonnen is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Health Care Nursing at the School of Nursing, UCSF. She has been teaching in the Family Nurse Practitioner specialty as well as in various courses for all Master's students over the past six years. Most recently she has been selected to be a part of the distinguished Teaching Scholars Program at UCSF. Her interests include immigrant health, HIV, adolescent health, women’s issues, and obesity. She is currently the Director of Young Women’s Program, a faculty practice clinic providing obstetric and gynecologic care for at risk adolescents where she also serves as a clinical provider and preceptor. Her clinical practice over the past decade has been working with immigrant populations in Oakland, California at La Clínica, focused on chronic illness, prenatal care, HIV/STI prevention and mental health issues.

Week One: Introduction to Contraceptive Care and The Menstrual Cycle Week Two: Long Acting Reversible and Non-Reversible Methods Week Three: Hormonal Methods, Part One Week Four: Hormonal Methods, Part Two Week Five: Barrier, Fertility Awareness, and Lactation Amenorrhea Methods

Course Format

The class will consist of lecture videos, which are between 8 and 12 minutes in length. There will also be required reading assignments, case based study questions and weekly exams.
